Organic Waste Solutions

Without alternate solutions and use of organic waste, it ends up in a landfill where it anaerobically degrades to methane gas. Methane gas is 21 times more harmful than carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas. It has been found that over half of domestic and commercial organic waste is food waste, which typically has a high nutrient value too. These nutrients are lost from the nutrient cycle when the waste is landfilled.

Organic waste, unlike other waste streams, has a nutrient and an energy value which can both be harnessed by suitable solutions. Composting, vermicomposting and animal feeding are solutions which harness the nutrient value, while anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis and gasification harness the energy component. Don’t Waste sees the opportunity in a marriage of composting and anaerobic digestion as partnership which harnesses both the energy and the nutrient component, and has therefore set up an anaerobic digester at a composting facility to test various organic waste streams.

Don’t Waste also stays at the cutting edge of research and development, and will evaluate a client’s unique situation to come up with a feasible, fit-for-purpose solution for their particular organic waste stream.
