Does being a waste greenie cost you more?

Not so long ago, most companies simply dumped their waste. The most important issue was housekeeping – generate it, get rid of it quickly, keep the area squared off…

Today, off course there is a much better awareness of environmental concerns and hence the need to reduce waste volumes, recycle and manage our waste impacts in a more sustainable and responsible way.

Many view environmental initiatives as a cost …

Let’s explore a case study:-

At one of the shopping centres we service they generated 411,591 Wheelie Bins of waste in 2013.

Through our on-site waste minimisation and management service, our crew extracted 339,433 Wheelie bins of recyclable material from this waste stream.

This left only 72,158 Wheelies to dump!

Waste cost saving: R 7, 128, 100. Plus there was an income of close on half a million from  recyclers….

Of course there is our cost of service, but more than half of this cost would have still been there if the client was simply collecting, handling waste, temporary storing and dumping.

Net saving in this instance amounting to millions of Rands per year...

Plus environmental impact 

Waste Diverted from Landfill : 71,280m3

CO2 Savings as a result of recycling: 1,757,130 m3

Energy Savings as a result of recycling: 8,304,254 kWh

Water saved as a result of recycling: 20,609,000 Lt’s

Trees saved as a result of recycling: 13,405 Trees

Truly sustainable practice? oh yeah!
